The History of OCEAN and the Orange County Business Community

Share

When I founded OCEAN (Orange County Executives and Networkers) back in October 2007, I never imagined it would grow into the largest professional networking group in Orange County. What started as a simple idea – to bring like-minded professionals together in a relaxed, collaborative environment – has become a cornerstone of the local business community. Today, OCEAN counts more than 165,000 members and continues to grow by about 5,000 new people every month.

The Early Days of OCEAN

The mid-2000s were a period of big changes in Orange County. The region was shifting from being seen mainly as a suburban extension of Los Angeles to becoming a business hub in its own right. Startups, service companies, real estate firms, and tech players were emerging across the county. Yet, many professionals still struggled to connect outside of their immediate circles.

That’s where OCEAN came in. Our mixers gave people a place to meet without the pressure of a formal chamber or industry event. At the first gatherings, we had maybe a few dozen attendees. But word spread quickly. The community wanted a space where executives, entrepreneurs, and professionals could exchange ideas, make deals, and form friendships. Within just a few years, hundreds of people were attending our monthly mixers.

Growth Alongside the OC Business Scene

Orange County’s business community has a rich history. It was built first on agriculture, then on aerospace and defense in the post-war era. Later, the county became known for real estate, healthcare, and tourism. Over the past two decades, technology, finance, and life sciences have surged, creating a diverse economy that rivals larger metro areas.

Throughout this evolution, OCEAN has grown right alongside it. We’ve hosted events that highlight every sector – bringing together biotech leaders from Irvine, real estate developers from Newport Beach, startup founders from Costa Mesa, and creative professionals from Santa Ana. Our mixers, Executive Dinner Series, and curated programs strive to reflect the dynamism of Orange County itself.

The Community Impact

OCEAN has always been more than just a place to swap business cards. It has been a launching pad for ideas and ventures. Countless startups found their first investors through OCEAN connections. Partnerships formed over cocktails at a mixer have gone on to become multi-million-dollar businesses. And friendships built in our community have strengthened the fabric of Orange County’s professional ecosystem.

We also recognize that Orange County is unique in its blend of industries and its cultural diversity. That’s why OCEAN has always welcomed everyone – from recent graduates seeking mentorship to seasoned executives ready to share hard-earned wisdom. Our group has become a place where opportunity and access intersect.

Looking Ahead

As Orange County continues to rise as a national and international business destination, OCEAN is committed to evolving with it. The growth of life sciences in Irvine, the rise of clean technology in coastal cities, the expansion of healthcare and medtech, and the influx of global trade missions all create new opportunities for our members.

Our mission remains clear: to connect, empower, and elevate the Orange County business community. OCEAN has grown because it reflects the values of this region: entrepreneurial spirit, collaboration, and a commitment to growth.

What started in 2007 as a simple networking group is now a thriving ecosystem. And the best part? We’re only just getting started.
